On October 17, Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), delivered her closing remarks at the 2026 Autumn Annual Meetings held in Bangkok, Thailand. She highlighted that the meetings had engaged in in-depth discussions on critical topics, including the resilience of the global economy, the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and its associated risks, as well as the growing fragmentation of the global economy. These discussions culminated in three core consensuses.

Georgieva pointed out that while AI stands as a pivotal force driving economic growth, an overreliance on a solitary growth engine poses risks, especially given the current challenges to the foundation of global economic resilience.

Furthermore, she emphasized that the global economy is witnessing a heightened degree of fragmentation. Countries reliant on energy imports, which are excluded from the AI value chain, along with those embroiled in conflicts, are facing mounting pressures that hinder their development. Consequently, the benefits of global economic growth are not being distributed fairly.

Lastly, Georgieva underscored the profound impact that policy decisions will have on the future trajectory of AI, given its rapid advancement. All parties concurred on the necessity of not only harnessing the advantages of AI development but also establishing robust safeguard mechanisms to mitigate risks. Additionally, they stressed the importance of enhancing collaboration among governments, businesses, and international organizations to navigate these challenges effectively.
