OpenAI has introduced a substantial update to the ChatGPT browser extension. Now, whenever users reference Chrome during a conversation, the AI has the ability to access multiple open web page tabs as contextual information. This enhancement facilitates functions like cross-page content comparison and intelligent data structuring. The revamped sidebar enables users to launch ChatGPT directly while navigating web pages, seamlessly continuing their prior conversation history. Upon receiving explicit user consent, ChatGPT Work gains the capability to directly manage browser tabs. This extension is designed to work across various browsers, such as Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi, though it's worth noting that Opera currently lacks the sidebar feature. The actual functionality may vary depending on the desktop application version, account workspace configurations, and the official release timeline. The extension does not inherently possess unrestricted access to all web pages; accessing new websites and browsing history necessitates separate user approval. Users have the autonomy to determine the extent of permissions granted and can leverage their existing login credentials for web pages requiring a logged-in status. With this extension upgrade, OpenAI has officially discontinued and removed its self-developed browser, ChatGPT Atlas, from circulation. Consequently, its tabs, bookmarks, and browsing history will not be automatically synchronized or transferred to other browsers.
