On October 15th, it was reported that AstraZeneca signed a collaboration agreement worth up to $1.86 billion with machine learning biotech company Insitro, leveraging artificial intelligence to aid the British pharmaceutical company in developing new drugs for liver and heart diseases. AstraZeneca announced on Thursday that it will pay an upfront fee of $40 million to Insitro. Insitro will integrate data from both parties to delve into the pathogenesis of fatty liver disease and cardiomyopathy. If the research is successful, in addition to receiving up to $1.46 billion in additional payments, Insitro is also expected to receive royalties from drug sales. This collaboration is another example of the pharmaceutical industry utilizing artificial intelligence to accelerate the discovery of new drug targets. Previously, Insitro had already established drug development partnerships with Eli Lilly and Bristol-Myers Squibb, and received investments from institutions such as Andreessen Horowitz, BlackRock, and Temasek.
