On October 14, OpenAI, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice, jointly revealed that an employee had been apprehended and charged with a crime for installing concealed recording devices within the company's conference rooms. According to a notice issued by the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday, Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi employee, was taken into custody by federal law enforcement on October 9. The incident came to light after OpenAI staff uncovered a recording device hidden behind a television in one of the conference rooms. The company's AI model analysis played a pivotal role in pinpointing the individual responsible for the act. Alfozan had been a member of the company's product team since July 2025, and the conference room in question was regularly utilized for discussions on sensitive matters, including confidential research, product planning, business strategies, and government-related affairs. OpenAI has since terminated Alfozan's employment and emphasized that no evidence of theft of model weights, source code, or customer data has been discovered. The company has also reported the incident to the FBI, and the investigation remains ongoing.
