Twenty-six former Meta employees have filed a lawsuit in the Federal Court of Oakland, California, accusing Meta of unfairly using AI algorithms to screen employees during this year's large-scale layoffs, disproportionately targeting disabled employees and those on medical leave. The plaintiffs claim that Meta used data such as productivity metrics and AI token usage to screen for layoffs, making employees absent for medical reasons more likely to be laid off. This year, Meta announced the layoff of approximately 10% of its global workforce, totaling nearly 8,000 people, with the layoffs conducted in batches starting in May. The plaintiffs, hailing from six states including California and New York, as well as the District of Columbia, accuse Meta of violating U.S. federal and state laws prohibiting discrimination against disabled employees, those on medical leave, and pregnant employees. A Meta spokesperson responded by stating that these allegations are unfounded, emphasizing that all human resource management and organizational decisions are made by humans, not by AI.
