On July 14, 2026, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, called for the United States to take the lead in establishing an artificial intelligence standards regulatory body to coordinate and manage national security risks posed by new-generation AI models, including cybersecurity, biosecurity, and nuclear safety. He suggested modeling it after the US Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) to create a US-led, federally supervised public-private partnership staffed by world-class technical experts. This body would conduct safety reviews of the most advanced AI models before public release and coordinate industry-wide slowdowns when risks escalate. Previously, Hassabis had proposed similar initiatives at the G7 summit, and OpenAI founder Sam Altman had also called for the establishment of a comparable regulatory organization.
