The Linux Foundation has recently made a significant announcement regarding the launch of the x402 Foundation. This initiative is geared towards formulating standardized specifications for internet-native payments tailored for AI agents and their associated applications. The establishment of the foundation was formalized following Coinbase's transfer of the x402 protocol to the Linux Foundation.
Operating on an open-source model, the x402 Foundation boasts the participation of tech behemoths like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft as its members. The x402 protocol, which leverages the HTTP 402 status code, seamlessly integrates payment functionalities into the web request process. This integration empowers AI agents, APIs, and a diverse range of applications to execute transactions concurrently when initiating service requests. It endorses a 'pay-per-request' framework, thereby offering foundational technical backing for machine-to-machine (M2M) transactions.
Notably, the protocol's versatility extends beyond cryptocurrency transactions, encompassing traditional payment avenues such as credit cards, ACH, and bank transfers. As of April 2026, the x402 protocol has been embraced by over 500,000 entities, facilitating more than 165 million transactions with a cumulative value of $50 million.
