Recently, online whispers have surfaced suggesting that Alibaba's Chief Scientist, Zhou Jingren, has tendered his resignation, with the process still underway. Since the dawn of this year, Zhou Jingren has witnessed a flurry of job transitions within Alibaba. In early March, Lin Junyang, the technical maestro behind Alibaba's Qwen, bowed out owing to differences over the model team's restructuring. Zhou Jingren then stepped into the breach, taking the helm of Qwen and shouldering full responsibility for its research and development, as well as resource orchestration. Subsequently, Alibaba forged a Group Technology Committee, with Wu Yongming at the helm as chairperson. Zhou Jingren was then anointed as the Group's Chief AI Architect and, concurrently, the head of the revamped Tongyi Large Model Business Unit. His remit encompassed the high-level technical architecture design of Alibaba's large models, the execution of the Qwen technical roadmap, and the fusion of AI technologies with diverse businesses across the Alibaba conglomerate. Moreover, Alibaba proclaimed that Zhou Jingren would don the mantle of Alibaba's Chief Scientist and spearhead the creation of the Alibaba AI Future Research Institute, with a laser focus on the exploration and advancement of cutting-edge AI technologies.
As per the information at hand, Zhou Jingren joined Alibaba's ranks in 2016. His academic journey began at Chengdu No.12 High School, continued through the Undergraduate Program for Gifted Young Students at the University of Science and Technology of China, and culminated in a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Prior to his Alibaba tenure, he served as a Research and Development Partner (Big Data Infrastructure) at Microsoft China. During his stint at Alibaba, he has occupied several pivotal roles, including Alibaba VP, Chief Scientist of Alibaba Cloud, CTO of Alibaba Cloud, and Vice President of DAMO Academy. In 2025, he ascended to the esteemed position of Alibaba Partner, marking him as one of the select few executives with a purely technical pedigree to penetrate Alibaba's highest echelons of decision-making. Simultaneously, he was also the mastermind behind the Tongyi large model team from its inception and a linchpin in the Qwen series models.
