On June 8 (local time), as Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) was underway, activists staged a protest outside the visitor center at Apple’s Cupertino campus. Their demands were clear: Apple should remove apps facilitating the creation and distribution of “deepfake nudity” from the App Store and take decisive action to completely eradicate known images of child sexual abuse from iCloud.

This call to action followed a revealing report by a non-profit organization, which highlighted that both Apple’s and Google’s app stores were inundated with such problematic applications. Despite both companies having explicit policies in place to prohibit such content, these apps persistently appeared through search recommendations and other channels. Shockingly, these apps have collectively amassed over 483 million downloads and generated approximately $122 million in revenue.
