On June 3, Google announced the launch of testing for a new control feature that allows website owners to autonomously manage how their links and content are displayed in Google's generative AI search capabilities. Initially, during the testing phase, this feature will be available to select website owners in the UK. Through the Search Console tool, an opt-out toggle option will be introduced, enabling website owners to choose whether their sites appear in Google's generative AI search features (such as AI Overviews, AI Mode, or AI Overviews in Discover), as well as whether to allow their content to be used for generating relevant responses. Google revealed that AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users, and AI Mode has over 1 billion monthly users, with a gradual increase in the number of links included in AI results. Notably, opting out of this feature will not affect a website's visibility in regular search, and this control feature will not serve as a ranking signal. Additionally, this setting applies only to specific Google search products and does not include the Gemini app.
