On June 3, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) issued a directive compelling Google to overhaul its AI-driven search service. This move grants UK website operators and publishers the ability to exclude themselves from the 'AI Overview' feature, thereby preventing the automatic scraping of their content and links. The initiative is designed to safeguard the interests of publishers, who have voiced concerns that Google's generative search capabilities enable users to access content summaries without the need to click on links. This, in turn, has led to a decline in website traffic and a subsequent loss in advertising revenue. The newly established guidelines also mandate Google to acknowledge sources and provide links when quoting content. In response, Google has announced that it has commenced testing a novel control mechanism, which will empower website owners to dictate how their content is presented within AI-based search results.
