On February 24, 2026, U.S. Department of Defense officials confirmed to Axios that Elon Musk's xAI has signed an agreement with the military, allowing the deployment of its large-scale model Grok in classified systems. Previously, only Anthropic's Claude model was permitted for use in such systems. However, after the Pentagon pressed for expanded usage and was rejected, alternatives are now being sought. xAI agreed to the criterion of 'all lawful uses,' becoming the second model allowed in classified systems. It remains unclear whether xAI can fully replace Anthropic and how long that process would take.
