According to local reports on February 21, OpenAI revealed that Jesse Van Rottselar, the perpetrator of the Tabler Ridge campus shooting in British Columbia, Canada, described gun-related violent scenarios while using ChatGPT in June 2025. These descriptions were automatically flagged by the system. Some OpenAI employees urged the company's leadership to notify Canadian law enforcement authorities. However, the leadership ultimately decided against contacting the authorities. Instead, they only banned his account, reasoning that his activities did not meet the criteria for reporting to law enforcement. On February 10 (local time), a campus shooting took place in the province, resulting in nine fatalities, including the suspect, and over 25 injuries.
