Despite facing widespread condemnation and scrutiny for its ability to generate pornographic images, Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has experienced rapid growth in the U.S. market. Its market share has skyrocketed from 1.9% in January 2025 to 17.8% as of this January, establishing it as the third-largest AI chatbot in the United States. Over the same period, ChatGPT saw a notable decline in its share, while Google Gemini’s presence grew steadily. Grok’s swift ascent can be largely attributed to its cross-promotion with the X platform. Consequently, xAI, which has consistently operated at a loss, has witnessed favorable growth and was acquired by SpaceX earlier this month. The newly merged entity plans to deploy AI data centers into space orbit. Recently, xAI has undergone management upheaval, with Musk reorganizing the leadership team. Despite Grok’s significant output in image generation, it has produced a substantial number of AI-manipulated near-nude photos, sparking public outrage and prompting investigations. Although the X platform has imposed restrictions, tests conducted by Reuters revealed that Grok is still capable of generating such content. Currently, Grok’s largest user demographic remains male, although their proportion has decreased.
