Recently, Amazon's Senior Vice President revealed that the e-commerce giant is set to lay off around 14,000 full-time staff, which constitutes 4% of its entire workforce. The bulk of these job cuts will hit the retail and logistics divisions, with the initial round affecting mainly managers at the L5 to L7 levels. To cushion the blow, Amazon is offering the affected employees a 90-day window for internal priority rehiring, along with severance packages and additional support measures. Interestingly, following the layoff announcement, Amazon's stock price defied the market trend, climbing by 1%, though the move has sparked discontent among some staff members. Despite reporting a year-on-year sales increase in the second quarter, Amazon's management maintains that cost-cutting and structural adjustments are crucial for boosting profitability. At the same time, Amazon is ramping up its efforts in artificial intelligence and automation. The company has already snapped up startups specializing in robotic technology, and its future warehouse construction will heavily depend on automated systems, with ambitions to expand to 50 fulfillment centers by 2027. Industry experts caution that this technological shift could lead to the displacement of a substantial number of blue-collar jobs in the years ahead.
