Microsoft's initial investment in OpenAI is now widely recognized as a shrewd strategic move. However, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has disclosed that, at the time, both the company and its co-founder Bill Gates viewed the decision as fraught with potential pitfalls. In 2019, Microsoft made a substantial $1 billion investment in OpenAI, a company that had been in existence for less than four years. Since then, OpenAI has garnered investments totaling over $13 billion. Nadella mentioned that initially securing this investment deal was no small feat. While it wasn't challenging to convince internal stakeholders of the significance and inherent risks of this emerging field, he didn't anticipate a hundredfold return on the investment at the time of making it. Bill Gates, too, approached the decision with a degree of caution. Since the investment, OpenAI has experienced rapid growth. ChatGPT, one of its flagship products, has achieved widespread acclaim and is currently utilized by over 800 million people on a weekly basis. This past Tuesday, OpenAI announced the completion of its restructuring process, with Microsoft now holding approximately a 27% stake in its profitable operations, which are valued at around $135 billion. Since the start of this year, Microsoft's stock price has surged by nearly 29%.
