Switzerland unveiled a national open-source large language model named Apertus on Monday, aiming to offer an alternative to proprietary models like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude. This model, a collaborative effort between the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Zurich, and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, has fully open-sourced its source code, training data, model weights, and development process documentation. It is now available on the AI model platform HuggingFace. Apertus comes in two versions: one with 8 billion parameters and another with 70 billion parameters, both supporting multilingual processing. Notably, 40% of the data used is non-English, including local languages like Swiss German, fostering multicultural inclusivity.
