On Sunday, Eastern Time, Tesla quietly launched its much-anticipated Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. Initially, only about 10 vehicles were deployed, and the service was limited in scope, available exclusively to invited social media influencers. This understated rollout contrasts with the ambitious vision previously outlined by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The vehicles are based on the Model Y model and come equipped with Tesla's proprietary visual perception system and Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. Each vehicle includes a safety monitor in the front passenger seat. The pilot service operates under an invitation-only system, with hours running from 6 a.m. to midnight daily, and coverage limited to specific areas in south-central Austin.
