On June 23, Tesla made a grand entrance into the realm of fully autonomous ride-hailing services with the official launch of its much-anticipated Robotaxi pilot program in Austin, Texas. This move signifies Tesla's bold challenge to Alphabet's Waymo, which currently dominates this burgeoning market in the United States. Unlike Waymo, which is the sole provider of such services in the country, Tesla's Robotaxi pilot service employs an exclusive invitation system, where the initial group of riders will enjoy a flat fee of $4.2 per ride. These rides are facilitated by Tesla Model Y vehicles, equipped with the company's proprietary visual perception system and Full Self-Driving (FSD) software.
