Tesla is grappling with a formidable challenge that could necessitate the replacement of autonomous driving computers in roughly 4 million vehicles or the provision of compensation to owners. The magnitude of this potential responsibility is staggering, with the potential to eclipse the largest vehicle recall in automotive history. Initially, Tesla pledged that all vehicles manufactured post-2016 would be equipped with the full complement of hardware required for full self-driving (FSD) capability. However, the company now concedes that its HW3 computers fall short of delivering on this autonomous driving promise. As a result, Tesla may be compelled to either replace the computers in these vehicles or offer financial compensation to their owners.
