In 2024, the sales of imported cars in Japan amounted to 232,330 units, marking a 6% year-on-year decline and the sixth consecutive year of falling sales. This trend is largely attributed to the depreciation of the yen and escalating prices. Amidst this backdrop, Chinese automaker BYD has defied the norm, with its sales in Japan reaching 2,221 units, signifying a 10% year-on-year increase. Notably, BYD's electric vehicle sales surpassed Toyota for the first time. To address range anxiety among consumers, BYD plans to introduce plug-in hybrid vehicles. Since its entry into the Japanese market in 2022, BYD has established multiple stores and anticipates reaching 100 by the end of 2025.
