The Chinese autonomous driving innovator Pony.ai has ambitious plans to roll out over 1,000 autonomous taxis this year, with an eye on deploying 10,000 vehicles across major cities within the next three years. This aggressive expansion is set against a backdrop of a target to achieve profitability by 2029. To mitigate costs, Pony.ai has forged strategic partnerships with BAIC, GAC, and Toyota, keeping the estimated cost per vehicle at around 270,000 yuan. The company anticipates reaching the break-even point for each vehicle between 2025 and 2026, with a strategic focus on large markets, particularly China's first-tier cities. CEO Peng Jun assured that the company faces no immediate financing pressures.
