Waymo has unveiled its ambitious plan to roll out a fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Spain by 2027, with Madrid earmarked as the inaugural city. In the lead-up to the official launch, Jaguar I-PACE vehicles, outfitted with electric powertrains, will grace Madrid's roads, piloted by skilled professionals. This endeavor will strictly conform to the guidelines established by Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic. In the meantime, Waymo has also disclosed its global expansion blueprint. This includes the launch of services in London this year, followed by an entry into Tokyo, Japan, in 2027 (in partnership with Nippon Kotsu Co., Ltd. and GO, subject to regulatory clearance), and a foray into the Toronto, Canada, market in 2028 (in collaboration with Element Fleet Management). Waymo highlighted that its autonomous taxis have amassed over 400 million kilometers of safe driving data, demonstrating a 95% decrease in collision incidents involving severe injuries when compared to human-driven vehicles.
