Oliver Blume, the CEO of Volkswagen Group, has appealed to the European Union (EU) to promptly extend additional tariffs to encompass Chinese-made plug-in hybrid vehicles. In 2024, the EU implemented anti-subsidy tariffs exclusively on pure electric vehicles imported from China, leaving plug-in hybrid models outside the purview of these taxes. This inconsistency in policy has paved the way for Chinese automakers to make significant inroads into the European market, as evidenced by the swift surge in sales of Chinese plug-in hybrid models across Europe. In the first half of 2026, sales of these models skyrocketed by 112% year-on-year, capturing a substantial 28% market share. In contrast, European domestic automakers experienced only a modest 4% increase in plug-in hybrid sales during the same period. Blume contends that this disparate regulation has tilted the competitive landscape, creating an uneven playing field, and he implores the EU to enforce consistent regulations across all electrified vehicle models.
