On July 8, Reuters reported that in the past, global automakers mostly regarded China as a low-cost manufacturing base to produce vehicle models developed by their headquarters. Today, General Motors, Volkswagen, and Renault are entrusting R&D work to Chinese engineers, leveraging China's strengths in areas such as electric powertrains and advanced software for innovation. For instance, Volkswagen plans to launch over 20 new energy vehicle models in China by 2026, with an average of one new model hitting the market every two weeks. Some of these models are specifically developed for the Chinese market and will even reverse-export technology to Europe. Renault, meanwhile, is shortening the development cycle of electric vehicles through its Chinese R&D center and applying the results to the global market. General Motors has also introduced models like the Buick Electra E7, developed in China, to strengthen its technological footprint in the country.
