At the Beijing Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz announced a major strategic shift, abandoning dedicated electric vehicle platforms. In the future, internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric models of the same class will share a unified platform, eliminating separate designs and architectures for gasoline and electric vehicles. A member of the Mercedes-Benz Group Board of Management stated that previous estimates for the speed of electrification transition were overly optimistic, noting that customers demand both powertrain choice and a consistent brand experience. Currently, the entry-level MMA platform already supports both pure electric and hybrid powertrains, with this approach set to debut in the next-generation E-Class and later adopted by flagship models such as the S-Class, GLE, and GLS during their respective redesigns.
