On February 15, reports emerged that the No.1 Department of Equipment Industry, operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, has directed the National Technical Committee of Auto Standardization to undertake a revision of the mandatory national standard, Symbols for Controls, Indicators, and Tell-tales for Motor Vehicles. An exposure draft has been crafted and is now open for public review and comments. The draft explicitly mandates that critical functions such as turn signals, window adjustments, and integrated driving assistance systems must incorporate physical controls, thereby superseding the previous standard, GB 4094—2016. This revision introduces novel categories and technical specifications for physical controls, with the objective of bolstering driving safety. It ensures that essential controls are readily accessible and operable during driving, largely independent of visual cues. This approach diminishes the driver's reliance on visual perception, mitigates the risk of distraction caused by displays, and enhances the reliability and operational efficacy of the controls. Furthermore, the document expands the scope of the standard's applicability, eliminating descriptions that previously exempted electric vehicles. It also introduces requirements concerning the hierarchy and visibility of symbol displays, as well as symbols for power battery failure signal devices.
