Google will introduce a 'foldable screen gaming mode' for foldable devices in the Android 17 system, enhancing the gaming experience through a system-level virtual gamepad. This mode divides the screen into upper and lower halves in a 50:50 ratio, with the upper half displaying the game visuals and the lower half transforming into a customizable virtual gamepad. It supports a complete layout including dual analog sticks, a directional pad, function keys, and multi-level shoulder buttons. The virtual gamepad simulates physical button inputs at the system level, ensuring compatibility with all controller-supported games without requiring separate adaptation by developers. Players can adjust the gamepad layout, size, theme, and enable haptic feedback. Activation is simple—just unfold the device to automatically enable the mode, while connecting a physical gamepad will automatically disable the virtual one. This feature is expected to roll out with the official version of Android 17 in the coming months, with initial support for devices including the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, and OnePlus Open, among others.
