Based on the latest industry insights from Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities, Apple is poised to enhance the memory capacity of its entry-level iPhone, slated for release in the first half of 2027. This device will be powered by the A20 chip, marking a significant upgrade from the 8GB RAM found in current A19 models to a robust 9GB. This enhancement will be achieved through the integration of six 1.5GB DRAM chips, catering to the escalating memory requirements for AI inference tasks, which are expected to surge following the deep integration of iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence. Nevertheless, the 9GB memory will fall short of fully supporting the most advanced local AI models in iOS 27. Instead, it will enable fundamental on-device large models, AI-driven writing, intelligent summarization, straightforward photo editing, and basic interactions with Siri. On the other hand, the three flagship models set to debut in the second half of 2026—including a foldable iPhone and two iPhone 18 Pro variants—will feature the A20 Pro chip. These models will retain a 12GB memory configuration, achieved through eight 1.5GB DRAM chips, aligning with Apple’s stringent standards for comprehensive AI functionality.
