Google has announced its intention to impose a complete ban on sideloading installations within the Android ecosystem by 2027, compelling users to exclusively obtain applications via the Google Play Store. This strategic initiative is designed to mitigate the threats of malware and fraudulent activities by instituting a formal app review process. Google's internal data reveals that the incidence of malware in sideloaded apps is a staggering 50 times greater than that found in apps distributed through official channels. Moreover, the global financial toll attributed to sideloading-related malware soared to $8.7 billion in 2024. The implementation of this new policy will unfold in stages: initially, pilot programs will commence in September 2026 across Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, with a subsequent worldwide deployment slated for 2027. Developers are required to undergo real-name authentication and affix digital signatures to their apps; failure to comply will result in system-level rejection of their applications.
