On December 18, 2025, the U.S. Army took delivery of two LOCUST high-energy laser anti-drone systems, developed by AeroVironment and mounted on Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs). This marks the second incremental step in the U.S. Army's Adaptive Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL) prototype development program, signifying a key shift: directed-energy air defense systems are moving from experimental prototypes to frontline-deployable gear for mobile units. The LOCUST system uses a 20 kW-class laser paired with a large-aperture beam director, boosting its ability to neutralize drone threats. Its modular, efficient, precise, and scalable design allows for integration across multiple platforms, delivering a cost-effective anti-drone solution tailored to evolving battlefield needs.
