Apple has formally reached out to Samsung Display and LG Display, soliciting development-related information for iMac OLED displays. This move underscores the fact that the final product specifications remain undetermined. Recently, Apple has detailed its requirements for the iMac OLED specifications, specifying a 24-inch screen size, 600 nits of brightness, and a pixel density of 218 PPI. In light of these demands, both panel makers intend to implement large-scale OLED technologies. Specifically, Samsung Display is considering the adoption of a QD-OLED with a five-layer stacked architecture, whereas LG Display is leaning towards a five-layer W-OLED solution. Although Apple expresses a preference for RGB OLED technology, the current state of this technology does not allow for stable mass production of displays in the 20-30 inch range. Consequently, the two companies will leverage their existing technologies in the short term, while simultaneously undertaking long-term research into RGB OLED solutions. Apple envisions finalizing the development of iMac OLED panels by 2027-2028, with the actual product launch anticipated to follow at an even later date.
