On October 16, news emerged that China's total investment in research and experimental development (R&D) soared to RMB 3,928.82 billion in 2025. This figure not only surpassed the RMB 3.9 trillion mark but also represented an 8.2% year-on-year increase, underscoring a sustained and robust growth trajectory. Throughout the '14th Five-Year Plan' period, China's average annual growth rate in R&D expenditure stood at a commendable 10.0%, outpacing that of major global economies including the United States, Germany, France, Japan, and South Korea, and positioning China among the world's leaders in this regard. Presently, China ranks second globally in terms of total R&D expenditure, trailing only the United States, and boasting a figure 3.4 times greater than that of Germany (in third place) and 3.5 times that of Japan (in fourth place). The consistent upward trend in R&D spending has furnished formidable backing for China's ambitious endeavors to establish itself as a formidable science and technology powerhouse.
