Canonical is optimizing the desktop version of Ubuntu 26.10, improving its handling strategies when memory is insufficient. The new strategy will enable the system to terminate programs more reasonably under extreme memory pressure, preventing the desktop environment from crashing. This adjustment is based on the Linux 7.2 kernel, enhancing stability by refining the OOM (Out of Memory) mechanism to ensure that critical processes (such as the desktop environment) are prioritized for retention, while allowing non-essential applications to exit safely. Ubuntu 26.10 will be released on October 15th, with its core tools fully rewritten in Rust to further enhance memory security.
