The European Union (EU) has reached a preliminary conclusion that Meta's Instagram and Facebook platforms are in breach of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The EU asserts that features such as autoplay and infinite scrolling, along with design elements like Reels and Stories, have the potential to foster addictive user behavior. Furthermore, the EU has criticized Meta's current time management and parental control tools for their lack of effectiveness, and has mandated that these issues be rectified. Failure to comply may result in fines of up to 6% of Meta's global annual revenue.
Meta has expressed disagreement with the EU's preliminary findings, emphasizing that it has already implemented protective measures, including youth accounts. The company also stated its intention to maintain an open dialogue with the EU. It's worth noting that the EU made similar accusations against TikTok earlier this year, in February.
