Recently, Greg Kroah-Hartman and Sasha Levin, maintainers of the stable Linux kernel, announced an extension of the maintenance periods for multiple Long-Term Support (LTS) kernel versions. Specifically, the planned end-of-support date for the Linux 6.6 kernel has been extended from December 2026 to December 2027, increasing its maintenance cycle from 3 years to 4 years. This adjustment corrects the previous policy of shortening LTS version support to two years, aiming to extend the lifecycle of certain key versions based on industry and community feedback.
