Amidst the burgeoning growth of artificial intelligence data centers, the demand for electricity has surged significantly. On February 11, 2025, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission issued a directive, mandating PJM Interconnection, the preeminent power grid operator in the United States, to expedite the review process for up to 50 new power plant projects commencing in April. PJM oversees a vast network that spans 13 states, stretching from the East Coast to Chicago. These new initiatives are designed to bolster grid reliability and preempt potential power shortages anticipated by the end of this decade.
