Microsoft has augmented its renewable energy portfolio by 389 megawatts (MW) to cater to the burgeoning power needs of its artificial intelligence (AI) endeavors. This latest expansion comprises three solar energy projects, from which Microsoft will procure electricity for data center operations and acquire renewable energy certificates. To date, Microsoft's contracted renewable energy capacity totals nearly 20 gigawatts (GW), with the latest additions contributing approximately 2%. By sourcing renewable energy, Microsoft not only sustains its core business operations but also progresses towards its ambition of achieving carbon-negative emissions by 2030. Furthermore, the company invests in diverse carbon removal technologies and has purchased over 7 million tons of carbon credits to mitigate a portion of its carbon footprint.
