PJM, the largest regional power grid operator in the United States, is set to introduce new regulations. As early as mid-2027, data centers that fail to secure sufficient electricity in the capacity market will face temporary power outages during peak demand periods. Affected by the expansion of data centers and extreme high-temperature weather, the grid's instantaneous load surged to 168 gigawatts this month, reaching a 20-year high. PJM plans to initiate an emergency auction in September to fill a capacity gap of approximately 7 gigawatts per year starting from June 2028.
