On March 20 (local time), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) jointly released a public safety advisory, indicating that hackers linked to Russian intelligence agencies are targeting thousands of business instant messaging accounts—including encrypted platforms such as Signal—through a worldwide phishing operation. These attacks are mainly directed at high-profile individuals, including current and former US government officials, politicians, military personnel, and journalists. Rather than exploiting technical flaws within the apps, the hackers acquire user login details by impersonating chatbots from services like Signal. Dutch intelligence agencies have previously reported similar incidents, cautioning that even encrypted communications may not be secure for sharing sensitive information.
