On February 14, 2026, Micron Technology unveiled that it had officially commenced mass production of its 9650 series PCIe Gen6 solid-state drives (SSDs). This milestone positions Micron as the trailblazer in introducing the world's first Gen6 SSD specifically tailored for data centers. The 9650 series is available in storage capacities of 8TB, 16TB, and 32TB, delivering a remarkable sequential read speed of up to 28GB/s and a random read performance of 5.5 million input/output operations per second (IOPS). These figures establish new benchmarks within the industry. When compared to its preceding Gen5 counterparts, the 9650 series doubles the bandwidth while maintaining the same power consumption levels. Furthermore, it enhances energy efficiency by up to twofold. These advancements substantially optimize the performance of AI training and inference processes, augment data throughput in data centers, and contribute to the achievement of sustainability objectives. The 9650 series is categorized into two sub-series: PRO and MAX. The PRO sub-series is designed for read-intensive scenarios, while the MAX sub-series caters to mixed application environments. Additionally, the 9650 series supports both air and liquid cooling configurations, thereby meeting the escalating demands for higher performance density in contemporary data centers.
