A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers has introduced the Chip Security Act in the House of Representatives, mandating that all high-end graphics processing units (GPUs) and artificial intelligence (AI) chips incorporate location tracking mechanisms. This initiative aims to prevent the unauthorized flow of advanced technology to certain countries. A companion bill has also been proposed in the Senate. The legislation seeks to ensure that these chips are not diverted illegally or utilized in unauthorized AI projects, thereby bolstering national security. Under the bill, the Department of Commerce will be tasked with establishing specific technical standards, while exporters will be required to report any instances of diversion or illicit use.
