The Google Quantum AI research team has achieved a groundbreaking feat by demonstrating the 'magic state distillation' technology in real-time on the Willow superconducting quantum processor for the very first time. As per the report, the error rate of the quantum states after distillation is about 40 times lower compared to that of the undistilled states, boasting a remarkable logical fidelity of up to 99.99%. The research results, which have been published in the esteemed journal Science, suggest that this technological methodology, previously confined mostly to the theoretical realm, can now be effectively applied on actual quantum hardware.
