In a surprising turn of events, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revised the memory configuration of the upcoming AI5 chip not once, but twice within a 24-hour span. On October 1, Musk revealed that, in response to the mass production requirements for the Optimus humanoid robot and to keep costs in check, Tesla planned to slash the LPDDR5 memory of the AI5 chip from the initially projected 144GB to a more modest 72GB. Simultaneously, he announced a reduction in the LPDDR6 memory of the AI6 chip by approximately one-third, bringing it down to 144GB.

However, the very next day, Musk took to a social media platform to announce a change of heart. Tesla had decided to up the AI5 chip's memory to 96GB, a move aimed at ensuring the company wouldn't stand out as the sole manufacturer utilizing the lowest-density LP5 memory variant.
