Recently, Junyi Koike, the CEO of Japanese semiconductor firm Rapidus, made a bold announcement at a U.S. think tank gathering. He unveiled the company's ambitious plan to construct a semiconductor factory on the lunar surface by around 2040. This vision is fueled by the discovery of water resources on the Moon, which can potentially be harnessed for semiconductor manufacturing processes.
However, this audacious plan is not without its hurdles. High transportation costs pose a significant challenge, as transporting materials and equipment to the Moon is an expensive endeavor. Additionally, maintaining a factory on the lunar surface presents unique difficulties due to the harsh and unforgiving environment.
Interestingly, the CEO of IBM, a key collaborator of Rapidus, has expressed that the two companies are working hand in hand to develop 1-nanometer process technology. This technological breakthrough could potentially offer the necessary technical support to turn Koike's vision of a lunar semiconductor factory into a reality.
