Under the CHIPS and Science Act, the US Department of Commerce has formally concluded a $300 million investment initiative in the quantum computing sector. The department will allocate $100 million each to three companies—D-Wave, Rigetti, and Quantinuum—and acquire minority shares in them. This step marks a strategic pivot in the US government's approach to bolstering the quantum computing industry, shifting its emphasis from algorithm and software development to core hardware production, component engineering, and the establishment of large-scale manufacturing capabilities.

The capital market responded favorably, witnessing a notable surge in the stock prices of all three companies on the same day. The infusion of funds will be directed towards surmounting critical technical hurdles, including the expansion of superconducting quantum processors, the creation of advanced semiconductor technology prototypes, and the integration of photonic engines. This will expedite the shift of quantum computing from lab-based prototypes to commercial-scale production.
