As per a September 9 report from The New York Times, insiders disclosed that the U.S. Department of Justice is scrutinizing whether Nvidia has tried to sidestep antitrust oversight. The investigation centers on Nvidia’s transaction last year with AI chip startup Groq. In December of the previous year, Nvidia unveiled a $17 billion agreement with Groq, acquiring a non-exclusive license for Groq’s chip technology and bringing on board some of Groq’s top executives, including its founder, Jonathan Ross. U.S. regulatory authorities are concerned that such 'covert acquisitions' might suppress competition within the AI chip sector and bolster Nvidia’s already formidable market presence.
