Samsung Electronics is mounting a challenge to TSMC's dominance in the wafer foundry industry. The company's Taylor factory, located in Texas, USA, is poised to begin trial production by the end of this month. Remarkably, even before production commences, the factory has already secured a full order book, with commitments from industry giants such as Tesla and Broadcom. This facility stands as Samsung's key hub for 2nm chip manufacturing, boasting an initial monthly production capacity of 50,000 wafers—a figure that nears TSMC's 80,000-wafer capacity. At present, Samsung's 2nm process yield has achieved approximately 80%, and projections indicate that the volume of 2nm orders this year will surge to more than double that of last year. In parallel, Samsung is expediting preparations for the Taylor Phase II factory, which is scheduled to commence construction by the year's end, with the ambition of attaining mass production capabilities by 2030. Furthermore, other companies, including Intel and Japan's Rapidus, are also vigorously pursuing the deployment of cutting-edge processes such as 2nm.
