On September 3, news emerged that Korea Electric Power is in talks with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix regarding a substantial prepaid electricity payment scheme, with the objective of gathering funds for the construction of the necessary power grid infrastructure for the new semiconductor industrial complex. Under the present proposal, Samsung Electronics is set to make an advance payment of 20 trillion won, while SK Hynix will contribute 5 trillion won, summing up to a total of 25 trillion won—an amount roughly corresponding to the electricity costs for the forthcoming five years. Korea Electric Power clarified in a statement that this large-scale prepaid electricity payment system is designed to mutually benefit both the companies that urgently require grid expansion and Korea Electric Power, which is in need of investment funds. Nonetheless, the specifics, including the exact amounts of the advance payments and the periods they cover, remain to be determined.
