Patrick Gelsinger, the former CEO of Intel, extended his congratulations to quantum computing startup PsiQuantum for securing an expanded cooperation agreement with the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a deal valued at $125 million. As per the agreement, both entities will collaborate to evaluate the viability of developing quantum computing technology on a practical scale, transitioning it from the experimental realm to functional systems capable of tackling intricate challenges. PsiQuantum employs a photonic technology strategy, harnessing semiconductor mass production techniques and existing cryogenic facilities for system expansion. Its technological edge stems from the capability to attain scalable production through well-established silicon-based semiconductor processes. This partnership falls under DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking initiative, which aims to ascertain the feasibility of constructing an industrially viable quantum computer by 2033. Prior to this, PsiQuantum has secured multiple rounds of funding and forged cooperative ties with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and several national laboratories.
